Three finishes

Held in stock. Shipped from Birmingham.

Every Winfield & Turner piece is offered in three finishes. One is alive. One is stable. One is sealed. The choice depends on the kitchen you want to live in.

Polished Unlacquered Brass

The hero finish. The metal is left bare. From the first day, the polished brass begins to react with the air, with the hand, with the kitchen. Over the first weeks it darkens evenly. Over the first months and years it brightens in the most-touched places — under the fingertips, around the screw heads, along the leading edge of a drawer — and darkens in the recessed places that are not.

This is the living finish. We do not consider a developing patina to be tarnish; it is the metal taking a record of the kitchen it serves. We recommend it for owners who want their hardware to age with the house.

Aged Brass

A controlled, even patina applied at the workshop. The piece is cast in solid brass, polished, then hand-treated with a controlled patinating agent and sealed with a soft natural wax. The result is a warm, deep, even amber colour.

Unlike Polished Unlacquered Brass, the Aged Brass finish does not change with use. The colour holds. It is the recommended choice for clients who want the look of patinated brass from day one, and for English country interiors, painted shaker cabinetry, and traditional period kitchens.

Satin Brass (lacquered)

Brushed to a fine grain, sealed under a clear lacquer. The grained surface catches light softly without the high mirror reflection of polished brass. The lacquer protects the surface against fingerprints, water and the standard insults of a working kitchen.

The colour and surface hold for many years. This is our most maintenance-light finish, and the one most often specified for high-use kitchens, family homes, and contract projects.

Order finish chips

Complimentary 50mm brass chips in all three finishes ship free, anywhere in the world. We recommend ordering chips before committing to a kitchen-scale specification.

Each chip is hand-finished from the same brass we use to cast the hardware. The patina you see on your chip is the patina the hardware will develop in your home.
