Description

The Birmingham Guild's geometry, with the rose as its mark.

An eight-faceted octagonal knob in solid brass, mounted on a hand-hammered hexagonal backplate. The crown face is smooth and disciplined; the chased five-petal Tudor rose at its centre is the Birmingham Guild of Handicraft's own hallmark, recovered for a new generation of Birmingham brass.

Sand-cast in solid English brass. Side facets polished smooth, crown carrying the recessed rose, backplate planished by hand. Finished by a single craftsperson, start to stamp.

Specification

  • Knob diameter: 38mm
  • Backplate: 60mm across flats, hexagonal, hand-hammered
  • Projection: 38mm
  • Crown mark: chased Tudor rose, 14mm diameter, recessed 0.6mm
  • Single M4 fixing, brass screw included (M4 × 25mm)
  • Material: solid brass throughout
  • Finish: choice of three (see options)

Finish notes

Polished Unlacquered Brass develops a soft amber patina over years; the hammered backplate and the recessed rose gather the patina in their hollows. Aged Brass arrives pre-darkened, the rose already deepened. Satin Brass is brushed and lacquered for a stable warm gold.

Care & Maintenance

Solid brass is a living material. How to care for each finish depends on which one you have chosen.

Polished Unlacquered Brass — wipe with a dry cotton cloth. That is the entire routine. Avoid Brasso, Bar Keepers Friend, ammonia, bleach, vinegar; all will strip the patina. The metal will darken over months and brighten where touched. This is the point.

Aged Brass — wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Re-wax once every two to three years with natural beeswax.

Satin Brass (lacquered) — wipe with a damp cloth and dry. Avoid solvents and abrasives.
